Background
There is an epidemic of complex injuries of the upper extremities in Honduras. These can involve to Behring varying degrees key components of anatomic function, including skin, tendons, nerves, and bone. Economic data from Honduras has identified that approximately 80% of the Honduran workforce performs manual labor, highly dependent on upper extremity function.
These injuries challenge healthcare delivery at multiple levels, including initial care and determination of extent of injury. When initial care and assessment are in adequate, the potential for significant disability and loss of livelihood can occur. Prompt referral to medical centers, trained in evaluation and care of these injuries is imperative to provide optimal treatment and overall function. Currently, there is a paucity of available facilities, including Allied health care networks in Honduras.
Based on a 25-year volunteer commitment to provide care for these injuries at the Escuela Hospital in Honduras‘ capital Tegucigalpa, Honduraide, a 501(c)(3) corporation was founded to improve healthcare delivery for these injuries. We are committed to developing a more comprehensive approach to treatment while also strengthening education of local healthcare providers with the eventual goal of establishment of satellite centers throughout Honduras. Honduraide seeks to fund physician and Allied healthcare, professional education, improve initial and subsequent care throughout Honduras, and ensure appropriate follow up care in patient home areas across Honduras. Honduraide also hopes to provide key medical equipment and services based on care experiences. including identification of optimal, space, specific equipment, and facilities.

Goals: Patient Care

A central challenge in providing the best care to our patients is that they often will present for evaluation in a delayed fashion. Their injuries are then multifaceted in relation to skin, tendons, nerves, and bone. It is essential that their post-operative recovery is monitored by the team of surgeons, physical therapists, and other health care providers. Our patient population comes from all over Honduras. Proximity of patient care such as physical therapy is a key requirement in the recovery process.
Honduraide strives to better develop these relationships across Honduras to improve patient access to directed and quality care. In addition, gradually increasing the frequency of surgical missions at the Hospital Escuela allows team members to better direct post-operative care. This more structured approach to patient care in fundamental to the education of resident physicians, therapists, and other care givers. This will hopefully improve earlier evaluation and treatment in patient home areas across Honduras.
